Teaching Philosophy

Teaching is undoubtedly the most important part of our job as musicians. As performers, we hope to inspire each new generation of young artists, and as teachers we strive to encourage them.

I believe creative experiences are an essential aspect of life, and therefore I will teach any student of any age, ability, or expectations. I adamantly believe in adapting my approach for each student depending on their progress, personalities, and what they hope to get out of each lesson.

Instruments: I teach modern and baroque violin, modern and baroque viola, fiddle, beginning piano, and beginning cello. Fundamental music theory and basic music history will be included in most lessons, as I believe they are essential to an informed approach to making music. I will focus on genres that most interest the student while ensuring they continue to develop the technical skill necessary to achieve their musical goals.

Lessons: I teach lessons in 30 minute, 45 minute, and 1 hour blocks. Occasionally, lessons will be extended due to upcoming auditions or competitions, all of which will be discussed on an individual basis.

Cost: Lessons cost $50 per hour, or $25 per half hour. 45 minute lessons are rare, but the rate is the same at $37.50. The first lesson is always free.

Location: All lessons are either taught at my home in Okemos, MI, or online via Skype/Facetime unless discussed on an individual basis. Occasionally, lessons may be moved to a performance venue or the student’s home for increased convenience.

Payment Methods: I accept payment in cash, check, or all major credit cards via Square. Lessons may be paid individually or monthly, depending on the convenience of the student.

Cancellation Policy: In nearly all cases, a cancelled lesson (with at least one hour notice) that has been paid for ahead of time will simply carry over to the next: there is no fee. Likewise, a cancelled lesson (with at least one hour notice) that has not been paid for ahead of time will not be charged and has no fee. No-Show Policy: A student who fails to arrive for a lesson without notice, barring emergency, will be charged 50% of the lesson fee. Late Fee: There is no fee for a student who arrives late to a lesson, and in many cases the full lesson will still be given or additional time will be added to a future lesson to make up for time lost.
